Types of Baby Showers

The type of baby shower is slightly different than the theme, as a theme,
which is more about decoration, can be applied to any type of shower.

Below is a list of many of the common formats for baby showers.

Traditional

The Traditional baby shower is usually a sit-down brunch, lunch
or dinner.The invitations are usually written and sent out six
weeks before the event and the party is held in someone's
home or at a restaurant.  In this case, the mom-to-be may
be presented with gifts to open at the dinner table. As
mom unwraps her gift, it is also traditional to place stick
on bows and wrapping from her packages on her head
or in her hair.

Buffet

The Buffet is one of the easier showers to throw, and
merely involves setting up a long table that serves as
a food station for the guests. Guests are free
to serve themselves and nibble throughout the
games, gossip and celebrations.

Pot Luck

The Pot Luck is one of the most inexpensive ways to throw a
baby shower,although it does involve a bit of communication
and coordination to prevent two women from bringing the
same dish. Traditionally each guest is assigned
a dish to bring to the party, which is then laid out
on a buffet, so guests can serve themselves.
A Pot Luck Dinner can also be served the same way
as any formal dinner.

The Surprise Party

In this instance, the mom-to-be has no idea that she is about to
treated by her friends and family and all of the planning is done
in utmost secrecy. Usually this involves questioning close friends
and relatives to see what themes the mom-to-be would find
attractive as well as her needs. It is advisable to choose a day
during that suits the mom-to-be's schedule- when she is unlikely
to be busy or tired, and also a day when she is likely to be
well-dressed. Usually one person is designated to "trick" the
mother into thinking she is attending a completely different
type of social function. Desperate hostesses have even
been known to create a false emergency to encourage a
reluctant mother to emerge from the house. Sometimes
the mom's partner is the best partner-in-crime and
can provide distractions for the mother while her
friends prepare her house for the event.

A baby shower can be had when baby is born- it doesn't have to be held when mom is pregnant, its not the hard and fast rule. So for a baby shower that is when baby has come it can be a lot of fun to give something really personal for baby.

I found a great website for a baby shower gift for mom to celebrate baby. Its a personalised baby candle. These are so beautiful for a baby shower gift because they speak to the heart rather than the head. There is a website you can go to called www.wicksend.com.au and they make baby candles and you can use this gift for a baby shower. Here is a photo from their website. So how do we select the right baby shower gift thats educational for baby and not break the bank? First of all think about your budget for the baby shower gift. Lets say you want to spend no more than $10. You will also need to buy a baby shower gift with babies future development in mind.

Toys, as a gift for a baby shower is a good idea so lets look at what mom might need. Toys are very cute and entertaining for us but for baby they are purely learning tools. One important thing that was brought to my attention when I attended my friend Tanyas baby shower was by Dr Katherine Tassioulas. A Physcologist who has studied early development.

Dr Tassioulas suggested I start looking for an educational toy for a baby up to 12 months old for Tanyas baby shower.

In a nuthsell babies that have these toys in front of them tend to want to touch them because their visual senses can detect and distinguish them from other colors. Its also important, said Dr Tassioulas, that in selecting a gift like this for a baby shower, then the toys be more simple the younger the child is, and no little plastic bits that can potential break off and go in babys mouth.

She also advised me that Tanya might appreciate a toy that provided stimulation for her babies sense of touch and sound such as a rattle that jingled and made a nice sound. Like a rattle with a bell, and a yellow or red one at that.

So off I went to find a red or yellow rattle that jingled, for Tanyas baby shower. Not only that but I wanted a soft one so her baby would not injure herself or himself on any sharp or hard bits, this is important because babies get their first teeth pretty quick.

And on it there was the perfect baby shower gift! It was such a happy looking gift and it was only $3.79 and made of soft terry towling fabric. This means it was easy to clean and easy for baby to chew on.

Well, how did you go with idea number 1? Or did you eat it? Okay, no I was just kidding.

Now for Baby Shower Gift Number 2.

One thing I really loved at my baby shower was a baby mobile. I got it from a friend and really found it so very useful.

There are so many to get from Thomas The Tank Engine to Symphony In Motion, to Three Little Monkeys to all kinds of animals hanging off the mobile itself. You can choose from an array of colorful mobiles that hang safely above babys crib and baby won't be able to reach it.

I've seen baby mobiles that glow in the dark, play a gentle song, and even talk to baby. You can start your baby mobile search by going to http://www.geniusbabies.com/mobiles1.html
from there you can see a good starting range.

Make sure there are no little bits that can fall off and go into babies mouth- within months baby can be pulling things off that mobile faster than you can say "diaper" and before you know it there is something in his or her mouth. So make sure the mobile is adjusted to be well out of reach.

Baby Shower Gift Idea Number 1

You know trying to come up with ideas for a gift to take to a baby shower is not always an easy thing. So I have come up with an idea that I hope you will like...and its under $10. Infact one of these is only $2.99.

You can buy a pair of baby booties and place some heart shaped chocolate in them. Not only this will mom will be needing baby things in the months to come but she will apprecaite a sweet gift.

But first find out if mom is okay with chocolate. When I was pregnant I thought chocolate was pretty average. It went from being sweet and delicious to ordinary and plain, so check with your hostess first.

If mom doesn't like chocoloate (for some reason most likely related to pregnancy, I mean what else could going off chocolate be?) then you can put two little baby figurines in them. This will especially work well if she's carrying twins. Or you can place some jelly beans if she is adverse to chocolate.
